How to Prove Your Right to Work in the United Kingdom

What you need to provide depends on your citizenship and immigration status. Find the section below that matches your situation: - British Citizens - Irish Citizens - Non-UK Citizens With an Immigration Status - British Overseas (BNO) Citizens - Asylum Seekers and Refugees - If You Don't Have Any of These Documents ## British Citizens ### Do You Hold a British Passport? If yes, this is the only document you need. Your passport must be valid for us to verify it digitally — if it's expired, your employer will need to check it manually instead, and digital verification isn't possible. This route doesn't cover British National (Overseas) passports; see **British Overseas (BNO) Citizens** below. ### Do You Have a UK Birth Certificate? Share a copy of your birth certificate along with proof of your National Insurance number — an official letter or document from a government agency (for example HM Revenue and Customs, the Department for Work and Pensions, or the Social Security Agency in Northern Ireland) or a previous employer, showing your name and National Insurance number. You will then need to provide these physical documents to your employer so they can be verified **manually**. **These cannot be verified digitally.** ### Do You Have a Certificate of Registration or Naturalisation as a British Citizen? Share your certificate along with the same National Insurance proof described above. This route doesn't cover a certificate of registration or naturalisation as a British Overseas Territories citizen. As described in the previous section, you will then need to provide these physical documents to your employer so they can be verified **manually**. **These cannot be verified digitally.** ## Irish Citizens ### Do You Hold an Irish Passport? If yes, this is the only document you need — you can present it even if it's expired. Expired passports cannot be verified digitally; this will need to be verified manually with your employer. ### Do You Have an Irish Birth Certificate? Share a copy of your Irish birth certificate along with proof of your National Insurance number, in the same way as described under **British Citizens** above. You will need to provide these physical documents to your employer so they can be verified **manually**. **These cannot be verified digitally.** ### Are You a Frontier Worker? Share your frontier worker permit, either as a share code or as the physical permit. Physical permits cannot be verified digitally with Zinc; these require a manual check with your employer. ## Non-UK Citizens With an Immigration Status This covers anyone proving their right to work through an immigration status rather than British or Irish citizenship. The government's share code scheme lets you prove many of these routes online instead of sharing physical documents — which document types are covered depends on what you hold, as set out below. ### Do You Have Settled or Pre-Settled Status Under the EU Settlement Scheme? Use your government share code to prove your right to work online. ### Do You Have a Current eVisa or Passport Endorsed With Indefinite Leave to Remain? Share your government share code, or your current passport with the endorsement. The endorsement must be in date. If you are providing a current passport with an endorsement, this will need to verified manually with your employer. ### Do You Have a Current Immigration Status Document? Share: - A current immigration status document issued by the Home Office confirming indefinite leave to remain, or that there's no time limit on your stay in the UK, and - Proof of your National Insurance number — an official letter or document from a government agency (for example HM Revenue and Customs, the Department for Work and Pensions, or the Social Security Agency in Northern Ireland) or a previous employer, showing your name and National Insurance number. You will need to provide these physical documents to your employer so they can be verified **manually**. **These cannot be verified digitally.** ### Do You Have a Current Passport With a Home Office Endorsement? Share a copy of your passport photo page and the pages showing the endorsement. The endorsement must be in date. If you are providing a current passport with an endorsement, this will need to verified manually with your employer. ### Do You Have an Application Registration Card? Present your registration card. Your employer will use the Home Office's [Employer Checking Service (ECS)](https://www.gov.uk/employee-immigration-employment-status) to check your right to work, then check your status again after 6 months. These cannot be verified digitally with Zinc. ## British Overseas (BNO) Citizens Holding a British National (Overseas) passport doesn't give you an automatic right to work in the UK, and the passport alone can't be used as proof. You'll need to provide a valid share code instead — you can generate one using your BNO visa on the [government's right-to-work service](https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-work). ## Asylum Seekers and Refugees ### Waiting on an Asylum Decision? Present your application registration card (ARC) to your employer. They'll need to use the Home Office's [Employer Checking Service (ECS)](https://www.gov.uk/employee-immigration-employment-status) to check your right to work — this is a step your employer has to complete themselves; **we can't do this on your behalf through Zinc**. Once they've completed it, they can send us the ECS Positive Verification Notice by email or live chat, and we'll upload it to Zinc as your right-to-work evidence. Your employer will then check your status again after 6 months. ### Already Have a Share Code?
