How to Verify a UK Civil Status Document for UK Right to Work Checks
For a right to work check in the UK on Zinc, a valid UK passport is a requirement for submitting this check digitally.
However, sometimes a candidate does not have a valid UK/Irish passport and only has their UK/Irish Birth Certificate or UK/Irish Adoption Certificate to verify their identity.
If the candidate selects they don't have a passport, the candidate will be asked to provide their UK or Irish Birth Certificate/Adoption Certificate as well as Proof of National Insurance documents to Zinc.
## Next steps
When these documents are provided, the candidate’s report will be flagged with an **Attention Needed** status and you will see an **Action Required** status in the affected check.
You will also see this inside the **Check progress** panel with a check box for you to complete on the right hand side of the screen.
Please note: This tick box will only appear, if they do not have a valid passport.
## Manual check
You will need to carry out the check manually to complete this check.
**What you need to do:**
1. Get the original documents from the candidate
2. Check them carefully in person
3. Make copies to keep
4. Keep all copies securely for as long as they work for you, plus two years after which after this period they should be securely destroyed.
**You must have the actual physical documents with you - not just photos or scans. The candidate must be present when you check their documents (either in person or on video call).**
After doing this, you will have established statutory excuse for the right to work check.

After the manual check is completed, tick the box to confirm you have reviewed the documents manually.
After you complete the tick box, the Right to Work check will display a **Consider** status.
That’s it! The right to work check is now completed on Zinc.
