How to Use the Values to Look For Preference in Zinc Reference Checks
The **Values to look for** preference for Zinc's reference check is a great way to flag for positive or negative qualities found in provided references.
For example, if you want the candidate's report to flag when a reference mentions the candidate is hard-working or referrals are made to a regulatory body, you can set up your references in a way to scan for these values and highlight them on the top of the report.
## Step one: Add in your values
1. Open up your specified package in the package editor.
2. Scroll down to the **Preferences** section to find **Values to look for**.

3. Add the values you want the provided references to be scanned for.
For example, we want to flag for **Allegations Made** and **Referrals made to either the DBS or PVG/SSSC** in any reference given.

Once you've added your values, move to the next step.
## Step two: Tailor your questionnaire
Now that you've added your values to search for, you need to tailor your questionnaire to prompt referees to provide those answers.
1. Click **Customise questions** on the reference type with the questionnaire you want to be answered.

2. In **Additional Questions**, select **Add new question**.
3. Select the type as **Multiple choice** instead of text.
Multiple choice works best as this preference must use exact text matches to flag for matches.

We've created the example question below to ask referees this specific question about allegations with multiple choice options so a referee has to pick one of the options below. This ensures exact keyword matching vs. ambiguous yes/no responses.

To add in an option, type in the **Options** box what you want one of the answers to be.
For this example, we chose:
- No
- Disciplinary Action Taken
- Allegation Made
- Went Through/Under Investigation
After adding in your options, click **Save questions** to save this question and your questionnaire.
## Step three: Request checks
Once you have add your questionnaire, you will need to request checks for your candidate to complete.
You can learn more about requesting checks [here](https://help.zincwork.com/hc/hm54ky7yrc/article/b1feb366-how-to-make-a-new-request-within-zinc-and-resend-candidate-links).
## Step four: Look for matching values on the candidate's report
Once your candidate's references have been completed, you can review the matching values found on the candidate's report.
All values to look for that were supplied in the Preferences will show up but **it will show a tick mark next to which ones came up in the supplied references like below.**

If you ever update the package with new or updated values, the matching values would change on the candidate's report.
That's it! Now you are set up to scan any references provided in this package for any matching values provided by referees.
