How to Name Standard DBS Packages for FCA Regulated Roles with CF/SMF Codes

When setting up a Standard DBS check for FCA regulated roles in Zinc, the package name isn't just a label — it tells Zinc which Controlled Function (CF) or Senior Management Function (SMF) the check needs to cover. If the package name doesn't include the relevant CF/SMF code, the application can stall while that information is clarified manually. Getting this right upfront avoids delays. --- ## What is a Controlled Function (CF) code? Controlled Functions are FCA-defined roles within financial services that require a Standard DBS check as part of the fit and proper assessment process. Each role has an associated CF code, and that code needs to be reflected in your package name so Zinc can confirm the check is scoped correctly. ## What is a Senior Management Function (SMF) code? Senior Management Functions are FCA-designated senior management roles within SMCR firms that require a Standard DBS check as part of the fit and proper assessment process. Each role has an associated SMF code, and that code needs to be reflected in your package name so Zinc can confirm the check is scoped correctly. --- ## How to name your package Include the CF/SMF code in brackets at the end of the package name. | CF/SMF code | Role | Example package name | |---|---|---| | CF1 | Director | Director Check (CF1) | | CF2 | Non-executive director | Non-Executive Director Check (CF2) | | CF3 | Chief executive | Chief Executive Check (CF3) | | SMF16 | Compliance Oversight Function | Compliance Oversight Check (SMF16) | | SMF3 | Executive Director Function | Executive Director Check (SMF3) | | CF30 | Customer function | Customer Function Check (CF30) | For the full list of FCA Controlled Functions applicable to your firm type, refer to the FCA Handbook: - [SUP 10A.4 — FCA controlled functions (appointed representatives)](https://handbook.fca.org.uk/handbook/sup10a/sup10as4#p28538) - [SUP 10C.4 — FCA-designated senior management functions (SMCR firms)](https://handbook.fca.org.uk/handbook/sup10c/sup10cs4#p34749) --- ## What happens if the CF/SMF code is missing? The application will enter a query hold and cannot progress until the information is provided, causing delays for the candidate and additional back-and-forth with your team. --- ## Not sure which CF/SMF code applies? Check with your compliance team or refer to the FCA Handbook links above. You can also contact your Zinc account manager and we'll help clarify before the check is set up.
