How to Sign Up for the DBS Update Service: Steps and Requirements

Please note that the DBS Update Service is for **Standard and Enhanced** **DBS** **checks only.** Zinc does **not** subscribe you to this service **automatically** once you complete an Enhanced DBS check with us, but you can follow the steps below to sign yourself up when you are in the process. It costs £16 per year and you can pay by debit or credit card. There’s no charge if you’re a volunteer **and** you have a volunteer DBS certificate. ### If you are in the process of getting a Standard or Enhanced DBS check You will need your application reference number. You can ask our Support Team via live chat or email for your number. Additionally, once your criminal check is complete on Zinc, you will be notified via email of the result and with your reference number details on how to join the Update Service so you can always wait for this reminder. ![zincwork_hc_images/how-do-i-sign-up-for-the-dbs-update-service-1.png](https://storage.googleapis.com/public-fini-assets/zincwork_hc_images/how-do-i-sign-up-for-the-dbs-update-service-1.png) ### If you already have a Standard or Enhanced DBS certificate You will need your [certificate number](https://help.zincwork.com/hc/hm54ky7yrc/article/d09aec94-where-can-i-find-my-dbs-certificate-number) which you can find on your DBS certificate. You **must register for the Update Service within 30 days of the certificate being issued.** If you don't register within this time, you **cannot** register for the Update Service with this certificate. You can [register for the Update Service](https://secure.crbonline.gov.uk/crsc/apply?execution=e1s1) via the link. This service is only for Standard or Enhanced DBS certificates. For basic checks, [register for an online services account](https://disclosure.homeoffice.gov.uk/HomeOfficeExternalPortal/faces/wcnav_defaultSelection?_afrLoop=800848214483403&_afrWindowMode=0&_afrWindowId=null&_adf.ctrl-state=srz79q8mz_1) instead of using the Update Service. Once you’ve registered, you can [sign in to the Update Service](https://secure.crbonline.gov.uk/crsc/subscriber) to add or remove a certificate and view your details. You’ll be able to take your DBS certificate from one job to the next, **unless** : - an employer asks you to get a new certificate - you need a certificate for a different type of ‘workforce’ (for example, you have an ‘adult workforce’ certificate and need a ‘child workforce’ certificate) - you need a different level certificate (for example, you have a standard DBS certificate and need an enhanced one) If you complete your checks again through Zinc, we will let you know what your employer needs you to have on your DBS certificate. ## Renew your subscription **A subscription to the Update Service lasts for one year.** You can **renew** your subscription through the Update Service, either: - when you first register, **by choosing automatic renewal** - **up to 30 days** before your current subscription ends by manually making the payment - but you cannot renew on the last day of your subscription If you do not renew your subscription before it ends, you’ll need to apply for a new DBS check and [register for the Update Service](https://secure.crbonline.gov.uk/crsc/apply?execution=e1s1) again with this new certificate. **For an automatic renewal**, the payment will be taken from your card. No further action is required unless your card details have changed. The Update Service sends an email reminder 30 days before renewal, and if your payment details have changed, you must log in and update them before the renewal date. With Zinc, we can only check applicants that have an **Enhanced DBS check** via the Update Service in our platform at this time.
