Who to Use as a Professional Reference
When selecting professional references, choose individuals who can speak knowledgeably about your work experience and job performance. Good options include:
- Previous supervisors or line managers who directly oversaw your work.
- Clients or accountants if you were self-employed, as they can attest to your services.
- Former colleagues or clients if you worked as a freelancer.
If you cannot provide professional references, some employers may accept character references. In that case, suitable referees include teachers, tutors, or coaches who know you personally and can vouch for your character.
Note: Avoid using relatives as references, as they are typically not accepted by employers.
