France Criminal Check: Candidate Guidance
## How To Submit Your Criminal Check in France
### Step 1: Start Your Check on Zinc
Once your employer requests a criminal check, follow the automated instructions on Zinc to complete it. You can do this from a mobile or desktop device. If you don’t already have an account, you must create one.
### Step 2: Provide Your Personal Information
You will need to give your consent and provide the following details:
- First name
- Last name
- Date of birth
- Place of birth (city or town)
- Current address (the full address)
- Email address
- **Arrondissement number**, if you were born in Paris
*Use an email address you can access. The French authority requires it, and it will email you during the process.*
### Step 3: Upload a Copy of Your ID
Upload a copy of your ID, including the back of the document if it has one. You can use any of the following:
- **French citizens:** a valid French passport, a valid French ID card (both sides), a valid French driving licence, or a digital copy *(justificatif d'identité à usage unique, a single-use identity document).*
- **Non-citizens:** a valid foreign passport, a valid EU ID card (both sides), or a valid French or EU residence permit.
*French ID cards issued between 2004 and 2013, to someone aged over 18 at the time, remain valid for 5 years after the expiry date.*
### Step 4: We Submit Your Application
Once you have provided your details and ID, we submit your application to Casier Judiciaire on your behalf. You do not need to start a separate application.
### Step 5: Validate Your Application by Email
You will receive an email from Casier Judiciaire **(noreply@justice.gouv.fr)** asking you to validate your application. Casier Judiciaire is the French national criminal records authority, and the email is legitimate.
**Click the validation link** in the email to confirm your application. Casier Judiciaire will not process your request until you do.
### Step 6: Download Your Certificate and Upload It to Zinc
After you validate your application, Casier Judiciaire processes your request and sends you a second email. It confirms that your certificate is ready to download and includes a **reference code.** You need this code to access your certificate, so keep the email.
1. Use your reference code to log in and download your certificate from the Casier Judiciaire website.
2. Upload the certificate to your Zinc profile using the Upload certificate button that we send to you in an email. Alternatively, you can attach it in response to this email, or send it to contact@zincwork.com.
### Step 7: Wait for Your Results
Zinc receives your certificate and, once it has been processed, gives your employer a signed digital report in English. You will be notified once the result is uploaded.
## What does the check cover?
Except those deleted by rehabilitation laws or considered spent:
- Robbery
- Theft and handling stolen goods
- Fraud and forgery
- Criminal damage
- Drug offences
- Motoring offences
- Violence against the person
- Sexual offences
- Burglary
### Common FAQS:
**What if my name has changed?**
The authority only issues the certificate in your official legal name. If you have had a previous name that no longer appears on your current ID, you can upload your birth certificate showing that name. A birth certificate is also accepted as an ID copy.
**What if I can't find the email?**
The email is usually sent shortly after your application is submitted. Check your spam or junk folder first. If you haven't received it after a day or two, contact our Support Team at contact@zincwork.com and we will check the status of your application.
**I have a certificate already, can you submit this?**
Zinc can accept and validate certificates previously obtained, but only if they were issued within 3 months of your check's commencement date.
