Basic DBS Identity Verification Changes
## Summary
Candidates completing a **Basic DBS check** must now use a **valid, in-date UK passport** for digital identity verification.

Non UK passport holders will be asked to present their **foreign valid passport** **and** a secondary photo ID document such as a driving license, national identity card, or residence permit.

**Please note that we can only accept valid, in-date passports from the following countries**. **If you do not have a passport from one of these countries, you will be unable to complete the digital identity verification and need to complete a manual identity verification with your employer**.
> **Important:** Being from one of the listed countries does not automatically mean your passport will be accepted. The most common reason a passport is rejected is that it does not contain a working NFC chip (the contactless symbol on the cover) — older passports in particular may not have one. In some cases a passport may not be accepted for other reasons. If your passport is rejected, you will need to complete a manual identity verification with your employer instead.

Only presenting a driving license may have previously been accepted by Zinc however, they can no longer be used for this step.
## What’s changed?
In **April 2026**, The UK Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework update to **Gamma** is now in full effect.
As part of this change, Zinc has transitioned its identity verification to **Entrust’s Gamma-certified workflows**, formerly known as **Onfido**.
This means the rules for which identity documents can be accepted digitally are now stricter than before.
## Why is a passport now required?
Under Entrust’s Gamma-compliant process, candidates must meet the **M1A identity standard**.
In practice, this means the candidate must use a valid passport to complete digital ID verification. Non UK passport holders need to present a second identity document along with their passport.
## What if the candidate does not have a passport?
If the candidate does not have a valid passport, they will not be able to complete digital identity verification for their Basic DBS check. Additionally, an expired passport cannot be used. The passport must be in date.
They will need to click **I don't have a passport** on their identity check submission in order to indicate this on the platform to trigger the manual review process.

In this case, the employer will need to complete a **manual identity check** before Zinc can continue with the DBS submission.
You can read more about the manual identity verification process [here](https://help.zincwork.com/hc/hm54ky7yrc/article/b3c54a7b-when-recruiters-must-manually-verify-identity-for-dbs-checks).
## Who is affected?
This applies to candidates completing a **Basic DBS check** using digital identity verification.
Candidates should make sure they have:
- their passport
- a passport that is still in date
- the passport available when completing the identity verification step
