Best Practices for Setting Up Enhanced DBS Job Roles
With the change to adding job roles for Enhanced DBS checks onto Zinc, we want to make sure that you have the easiest time setting up your job roles.
The biggest takeaway we want to highlight from our new change is thinking more about the **activity** the role is performing more than anything else.
You don’t need to add in every job title you have into Zinc, **unless there's a difference in the activity they will be performing**.
To make it easy to understand, here's a few different examples.
## Working with children
I have a nursery that works with children with the following roles in my branch.
| **Job Title** | **Activity** |
| --- | --- |
| Nursery Assistant | Registered childminding or foster care |
| Junior Nursery Assistant | Registered childminding or foster care |
| Senior Nursery Assistant | Registered childminding or foster care |
| Nursery Director | Managing or supervising individuals providing regulated activities |
| Nursery Supervisor | Managing or supervising individuals providing regulated activities |
| Nursery Chef | Ancillary, non-direct contact duties performed in the specific locations where there are children |
With any of the roles that are similar and doing the same **activity**, we can add these into the system like below.
| **Job Title** | **Activity** |
| --- | --- |
| Nursery Assistant | Registered childminding or foster care |
| Nursery Manager | Managing or supervising individuals providing regulated activities |
| Nursery Chef | Ancillary, non-direct contact duties performed in the specific locations where there are children |

It just means that there’s less admin you have to do and we are condensing the job roles under the activity they are doing.
## Working with adults
I have a care home with elderly adults with the following roles:
| **Job Title** | **Activity** |
| --- | --- |
| Support Worker Apprentice | Giving personal care to adults (e.g. washing, dressing, eating, toileting) because of age, illness, or disability |
| Support Worker Level 1 | Giving personal care to adults (e.g. washing, dressing, eating, toileting) because of age, illness, or disability |
| Deputy Manager | Routinely managing or supervising staff working in regulated activity with adults or other activity with adults that requires enhanced level of checks |
| Care Home Manager | Routinely managing or supervising staff working in regulated activity with adults or other activity with adults that requires enhanced level of checks |
| Care Home Maintenance Manager | Working in a care home that is wholly or mainly for adults |
| Care Home Maintenance Person | Working in a care home that is wholly or mainly for adults |
With any of the roles that are similar and doing the same **activity**, we can add these into the system like below.
| **Job Title** | **Activity** |
| --- | --- |
| Support Worker | Giving personal care to adults (e.g. washing, dressing, eating, toileting) because of age, illness, or disability |
| Care Home Management | Routinely managing or supervising staff working in regulated activity with adults or other activity with adults that requires enhanced level of checks |
| Care Home Maintenance | Working in a care home that is wholly or mainly for adults |

## Working with adults and children
Our final example, I have a healthcare organisation working with both adults and children.
| **Job Title** | **Activity** |
| --- | --- |
| Patient Porter | Driving a vehicle used only for transporting children and adults (not taxis) |
| General Practitioner (GP) | Providing healthcare to adults and children |
| Call Handler | Providing guidance related to children’s educational, physical or emotional well-being and providing guidance to adult individuals |
| Healthcare Director | Managing or supervising individuals providing regulated activities |
All of these roles are performing a **different activity**, so we will add these **all** into the system as individual job roles.

## Summary
Now you know the best way to add your DBS job titles into Zinc: thinking more about the **activity** the role is performing more than anything else.
If the activity is the same, combine the roles into one on Zinc so you save time and reduce duplicates.
